Publication Growth and yield performance of two varieties of Colocasia esculenta (Gabi) planted in soil and water(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2013-10) Javier, Cristine May L.; Mapanao, Laarni D.This experimental study compared the growth and yield performance of two varieties of Colocasia esculenta (gabi) planted in soil and water. It was conducted in Barangay San Simon West, Aringay, La Union from November 2012 to February 2013. A total of seventy two (72) corms of C. esculenta (36 eddoe and 36 dasheen) ,were purchased in Aringay market, Aringay, La Union. Two treatments were used in the study; namely soil (T1) and water (T2). Two set ups were used which consists of three replicates of the two treatments and two varieties arranged following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)at 0.05 and 0.01 levels of significance following the statistical procedure for agricultural research (SPAR) was used. Data that were declared significant were further analyzed using Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results showed that there was significant difference in the number of adventitious roots of the two varieties of Colocasia esculenta being higher when planted in water than in soil. Between eddoe and dasheen, dasheen grew significantly longer leaves in soil than in water. Eddoe produced longer leaves in water than in soil and wider leaves in both planting media. Eddoe also produced more corms in soil than in water. Both varieties gave comparable yield when planted in either soil or water.
