    Socio-econohic analysis of coastal barangays in Caba, La Union for livelihood program

    The study sought to ascertain the socio-economic profile, livelihood preferences and constraint of four barangays of Caba, La Union, a total of 182 respondent participated in the study that made use of questionnaire-checklist. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, ranks and weighted mean averages were used. The respondents were male dominated, typically married and finished high school education. Some respondents still have children attending school. They are also basically Roman Catholics. They have high regards to education, meeting their basic family needs, and value family relationship and local culture. They give premium to values and traits such as patience, industriousness, cooperativeness and friendliness as they believe these are keys to achieve success. They also placed high values to their religious affiliation, family planning and household conveniences. Few hold positions in the barangay. Their common leisure are TV viewing and listening to radio programs. Some engage in cockfights, betting in jueteng and card games. Their source of water are pump wells or deep wells. Others preferred purified water. Majority have water sealed toilets but some were found to share toilets with their extended families or neighbors. Open pit burning or throwing waste in open pits is common. Some though make comport of their waste. Father respondents are either employed, a self employed, or unemployed. Most of the mothers though are plain housekeepers. Some derive income from farming and fishing activities. Those employed derive wages in construction work, security services, transport services or working as OFW. Few are engaged in small scale entrepreneurship average family income fall below the national poverty line of Php6,300.00. As to livelihood preferences, some prefer tending a sari-sari store, or engage in buy and sell. Others prefer tricycle driving, fish vending, farming, deep sea ing and piggery. Major constraints include lack of capital and lack of knowledge. They needed but money for a start up capital and technical assistance.
