Fungal diversity of mulberry-planted soils at DMMMSU-SRDI

The soil fungal diversity in mulberry plantations at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-Sericulture Research and Development Institute (DMMMSU-SRDI) has not yet been studied. Understanding the fungal communities present is important to assess their interactions with the mulberry trees. The study's general objective was to profile the culturable soil fungal community of two mulberry varieties, Alfonso and Batac. Rhizosphere sampling was done from two varieties. Rhizosphere soil samples were serially diluted and inoculated to acidified potato dextrose agar culture media using the pour plate technique. Fungal isolates were identified morphologically. The findings revealed a diverse fungal community with significant variations in species composition across the two varieties. Key genera identified include Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Trichoderma among others.
