Publication Survey of animals and their welfare in zoological gardens in Region I(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2015-03) Lacsamana, Gio Alfredo Thaddeus M., IIIThis study was conducted to: (1) determine the status and number of wildlife kept at selected zoos; and (2) to show how effective the zoos are in providing the five basic freedoms of animals, namely: Freedom from thirst and hunger, Freedom from discomfort, Freedom to express normal behavior, Freedom from fear and distress, and Freedom from pain and injury. A questionnaire was brought by the researcher to the selected zoos in order to gather information about the status and number of the animals kept. A census of the animals present was compared to a list from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and of animals that were previously itemized when the zoos had been registered. A total of 10 individuals were interviewed, 7 of whom answered the questionnaires, while the other 3 declined. Results revealed that most of the selected zoos had excelled in providing the necessary requirements to sustain the lives of the wildlife being housed, while the others are in dire need of improvement.
