(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2006-10) Garcia, Christine C.; Domondon, Aileen B.; Sumbad, Iris T.; Hipolito, Eloiza P.; Oribello, Nanette P.
This study was conducted to determine the mathematics difficulties of Grade VI pupils of Caba Central Elementary School. Specifically, it determined the following: (the profile of the respondents as to their age, sex, and grade in Mathematics V; the respondent's performance in the teacher-made mathematics test; and the topics in Mathematics found difficult by the respondents. It also determined whether there was a significant relationship between the performance of the respondents in the teacher-made test and their profile. The simple random sampling was the technique used in this study in choosing the researcher's respondents. The questionnaire was the main tool in gathering the needed data. The statistical tools like frequency counts and percentage, mean, Pearson product moment correlation and t-test were used to manipulate the gathered data. The results of the study were the: Majority of the respondents were 11 years old, the appropriate age for the grade level, the class was dominated by boys and the grade of the respondents in Mathematics V was satisfactory. The performance of the Grade VI pupils based on the given test was outstanding. Pupils found difficulties in ratio topics. Age and sex were independent from the performance test score while grade in Mathematics V was dependent from the performance test score. There was no significant relationship between the scores of the respondents in the teacher- made mathematics test and their age and sex as well as their grade in Mathematics V. From these findings, the following recommendations are set forth: Teachers should give more emphasis on the identified difficulties of the pupils in this study. Learning must be a two-way process where the teacher and the pupils have a good interaction. Pupils should keep on practicing learned principles so that they will not easily forget them. Teachers should use factual, practical and relevant experiences of the pupils in teaching worded problems. A similar study conducted in other schools and colleges' may be undertaken to validate the results of the present study.
