Performance of non-science majors teaching science subjects: basis for policy recommendations

This study used the descriptive research design and determined the personal and professional profile of non-science major teachers, adequacy of equipment and materials they used, and their performance which are the bases of policy recommendations on the giving of teacher assignments. The respondents of the study were the 22 non-science major teachers in the 15 public secondary schools. The Heads of Science Department per school were also taken as respondents and purposive sampling was employed for student respondents. Findings showed that the respondents are young, mostly female who are pursuing graduate studies, in their early years in the service, mostly not attending seminars/trainings and have limited affiliations to scientific organizations. The level of performance of the teacher respondents is very satisfactory. The equipment and materials utilized by the respondents are rated moderately adequate. The gender, teaching experience, and trainings/conferences were significantly related to the performance of the respondents.
