    Water conservation practices in the upland communities of Santol, La Union
    (Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2016-03) Fontanilla, Mercy O.
    The study was conducted to determine the water conservation practices in the upland communities of Santol, La Union. It specifically aimed to determine the a) demographic profile of the respondents; b) level of awareness on the environmental code of the municipality; c) level of adoption on the water conservation practices; and d) seriousness of the problems encountered in the implementation of water conservation practices. The study made use of a descriptive research design. There were 300 respondents in the study which were identified through stratified random sampling method. Personal interviews with the aid of questionnaires and personal observations were engaged to gathering of data. Frequency counts, percentages, means, ranking and analysis of variance were used in the analysis of data. Results showed that most of the respondents were females, aged 42 years old, married and elementary graduates. Majority of the respondents were farmers earning an income of Php 12,183.00 yearly and spending Php 10,000.00 yearly with rice as their main product. Their household composed of 5 members with spring as their source of water within 1 to 2 kilometers away. The respondents are moderately aware on the environmental code of the municipality. Results showed that respondents often adopted the water conservation practices on the household and agriculture. There is a significant difference on the level of adoption of water conservation practices among barangays. The problems encountered in the implementation of water conservation practices were rated moderately serious. An action plan was proposed for possible adoption by the local government on the management of water resources.
