Publication Incidence of banana bunchy top virus and fusarium wilt in La Union(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2008-03) Fernandez, Hilbert M.The banana plant, often erroneously referred to as a "tree", is a large herb with succulent, very juicy stem "pseudostem" belonging to the family Musaceae. To date, there are 91 varieties of bananas in the Philippines. This current list of banana cultivars consists primarily of local origin. Of the 21 foreign introductions described by Quisumbing in 1919, only five remain as distinct cultivars namely: Radja and Ambon from Indonesia, Katali and Maduranga from India and Tiparot from Thailand. The introduced cultivars that turned out to be synonyms of indigenous varieties such as the Morado de Cuba for the local Morado Manzana de Cuba or Apple banana for Latundan, Hawaiian Dwarf and Dwarf Cavendish for Sulay Baguio, Misi Luki and Keling for Inanget, Tondoc for Daluyao are now known by their local names (Valmayor, et al, 2002)
