    Prevalence of ectoparasites of carabao (Bubalus bubalis) in Ilocos Sur during dry season

    This study was conducted to: (1) identify the different ectoparasites affecting carabao in the hilly and lowland areas of Ilocos Sur during dry season; (2) determine the prevalence rate of carabao affected with ectoparasites in the hilly and lowland areas of Ilocos Sur during dry season; (3) determine which ectoparasites significantly occur in the hilly and lowland areas of Ilocos Sur during dry season; and (4) compare the prevalence of ectoparasites in the hilly and lowland areas of Ilocos Sur during dry season. Two hundred forty (240) carabaos from twelve (12) selected municipalities classified as hilly, and lowland areas in Ilocos Sur were used in determining the different ectoparasites and their prevalence rate during dry season. Ectoparasites were collected, preserved and were identified at the Parasitology Laboratory, Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IVM), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, North La Union Campus (DMMMSU – NLUC), Bacnotan, La Union. Data were tabulated and analyzed using frequency counts, means and percentages. The t- Test was employed in determining the significant difference between the prevalence rate of carabaos infested with ectoparasites in the hilly and lowland areas of Ilocos Sur during dry season. Eight species of ectoparasites were identified affecting carabao in Ilocos Sur during dry season. They were Culex, Haematopinus, Lyperosia, Musca, Sarcophaga, Simulium, Stomoxys, and Tabanus species. The prevalence rate of ectoparasites of carabao in the hilly and lowland areas was 100%. The Simulium and Lyperosia infested carabao were the most prevalent ectoparasite species identified in the hilly and lowland areas while the Culex species infested carabao were the least. There was no significant difference between the prevalence rate of ectoparasite infested carabaos in the hilly and lowland areas of Ilocos Sur during dry season.
