Publication Acceptability of kakawate (Glicidia sepium) leaf extract soap against mange in dogs(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2010-03) Espiritu, Noah Q.This study was conducted to: (1) to determine the efficacy awareness of respondents to Kakawate Leaf extract soap as an alternative medicine in controlling mange in dogs; (2) to determine the acceptability of respondents to Kakawate extract soap against mange in dogs. The study made use of the descriptive survey research which utilized 2 types of questionnaire as tool in gathering data (questionnaire A deals with the level of efficacy awareness of KLES, and questionnaire B which deals with the general acceptability of KLES). Respondents comprised of 132 dog raisers from selected barangays of Bacnotan (Cabaroan, Casiaman, Salincob, Sapilang, and San Martin) and City of San Fernando (Biday, Carlatan, Lingsat Pagdaraoan, and Tanqui) answered the questionnaire A and from 132 dog raisers 32 respondents answered questionnaire B. With regards to the age of dog raisers 25.76% aged 40-46 revealed the highest percentage. In terms of sex 53.79% were males while 46.21% are females. As to the educational attainment of the respondents 37.12% reached college level and 36.36% graduated in high school. The greatest percentage which is 38.63 percent of the respondents received a monthly income ranged from 1*5,001- 10,000 . The highest percentage number of years taking care of dogs was at the range of 1- 3 years (37.12%) followed by 10 years and above (29.54%). As to the number of dogs kept at home and purpose of raising dogs, majority of them (82.57 %) kept 1-2 dogs and 90.91% raise guard dogs. Most respondents kept mongrel dogs (90.15 %) and the major problem encountered were external parasites (70.11%). Awareness of the efficacy revealed that 82.6% of the respondents are not aware to the Kakawate leaf extracts soap (KLES) in treating mange in dogs, 90.91% are not aware that KLES is available in the market. Eighty nine percent (89.4%) claimed that they have not tried KLES in their dogs. Respondents (92.85 %) who claimed to be users of KLES mentioned that it is effective in treating problems of their dogs. Results further revealed that 37.71 % of the users obtain KLES from their relatives and neighbours. KLES users again confirmed that they use the soap to eliminate or treat external parasites (92.85%) and the duration of efficacy is 1 week (50%). All the KLES users claimed that it is 100% effective in treating mange in their dogs, produce lather or soap suds and it is easy to rinse off and does stick to the skin of the handler. The KLES have a pleasant scent (96.87%), no irritation to the skin of the handler (87.5 %), the coat of the dog become soft and smooth (96.87%), it melts slowly and water soluble (93.75%), affordable (87.5%), attractive color (75%), posses a smooth texture ( 90.62%), good shape and padcaging appearance (56.25%).
