Publication Knowledge and awareness on climate change of residents in coastal communities in the 2nd District of La Union(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2012-04) Espenilla, Jessica N.This study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge and awareness on climate change of residents in coastal communities in the 2ⁿᵈ District of La Union. A total of 345 coastal residents from five (5) municipalities were taken as respondents in this study. Informal interviews with the use of prepared questionnaires and personal observations were undertaken to gather pertinent data, which were analyzed and interpreted with the use of statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentage and weighted means. The SYSTAT Worksheet Program was likewise used. Result showed that many or (40.58%) of the respondents are in their middle ages 31-50 years old, married, high school graduates (29.57%). The respondents has stayed long enough in the coastal community from 45-49 years and earning a monthly income of P3000. The level of knowledge and awareness of the respondents on climate change was moderately aware and registered a grand mean of 2.97. The level of adaptation or mitigation practices employed by the respondents was rated as moderately practiced with a mean rating of 2.75. There was a significant difference on the level of awareness and knowledge, and level of adaptation/mitigation practices employed by the respondents among the municipalities of the 2ⁿᵈ District of La Union. There was a slight relationship exist between knowledge and awareness, and adaptation and mitigation practices employed by the respondents. The respondents’ awareness and knowledge on climate change issues, concepts and impacts prompted them to implement and utilize adaptation or mitigation practices to compensate the myriad impacts of climate change in their community and to make them less vulnerable to climate change.
