Efficiency of different oyster spat collectors along raois coe, Sto, Tomas, La Union
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2005-03) Durante, Marife G.
The study is entitled" Efficiency of Different Oyster Spat collectors Along Raois Cove, Sto. Tomas, La Union". It was an experimental research study focused on the efficiency of different spat collectors namely: string of oyster shells (TI), strips of rubber tires (T2), and bamboo stakes (T3).Specifically, the study determined the number of oyster spats that settled in the different spat collectors ,the appropriate month for setting the spat collectors, and the water parameters such as temperature, salinity, and water depth were correlated to the relative abundance of oyster spats. Analysis of Variance or ANOVA was used to compare the efficiency of the three spat collectors. Pearson Moment of Correlation was used to determine the significant relationship of the water parameters with the abundance of oyster spats. The design used was the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) to lessen the experimental error due to the existing condition prevalent on the cove. The salient findings of the study reveal that: four spats organisms were observed and found to have settled in the spat collectors namely: oyster (Genus Crassostrea), Barnacles (Balanus sp.), green algae (Chlorophyta), brown algae (Phaeophyta). The three species of oyster attached to the different spat collectors were Crassostrea iredalie , Crassostrea malabonensis, and Crassostrea palmipes. As the spatial distribution of oyster spats on the three different spat collectors, the upper layer collected the most number of oyster spats while the lower collected the least. Statistical analysis showed that the distribution of oyster spats among the treatments were significantly different. However, using the Least Square Difference (LSD) all treatments did not give significant average yield with each other. In terms of months, July to August did not give significant average yield of oyster spats but the month of October revealed significant average yield, Likewise, the study showed a high positive correlation of the number spats with salinity and negative correlation with the temperature and water depth. negative Based on the findings of the research study the following are the conclusions derivedĀ· Three species of oyster spats are present in the Raois Cove, The strings of oyster shells were more effective in collecting oyster spats, The best month for collecting oyster spats was in October and the temperature and salinity was significantly related to spat abundance.
