Zinc status of the major soil series in La Union
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University- North La Union Campus, 2023-03) De Los Santos, Jade A.
DE LOS SANTOS, JADE A. (2023). Zinc Status of the Major Soil Series in La Union. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Major in Soil Science. Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, North La Union Campus, College of Agriculture, Department of Soil Science, Bacnotan, La Union. Adviser: Amoyen, Julius Caesar M. Resources about the status of micronutrients especially zinc in the Philippine soils are very limited due to fact that most of the soil fertility surveys or studies conducted in our country gives more emphasis on the major nutrients which is macronutrients such as the nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) since they are taken up by our crops in large quantities (Palanog, 2019). Thus, it is being recognized that zinc deficiency is becoming a global and national problem in farming the agricultural soils. The situation above creates the need to inventory the status of micronutrients of major soils in the country which could be used as technical basis to conserve and prevent deficiencies before it becomes aggravate and difficult to manage (Agustin, L.C. et al., 1988). The researcher conducts soil survey of the major soil series in La Union to assess the current status or condition of the zinc level and its sufficiency. The result of this study about the available zinc content of the sampling sites is from borderline to very low which means that most of the soils in the major soil series of the study site are deficient. The correlation of zinc to the soil pH, electrical conductivity, clay content and organic matter are only observed in the following: the pH of Burgos series with a strong positive correlation, pH of Bauang with strong negative correlation, and strong positive correlation of organic matter content with zinc level in the soil series of Bauang, Sinapangan and Burgos.
