    Occurence of ectoparasites of goats (Capra hircus) in selected towns of Pangasinan during the dry season

    This study was conducted to: (1) identify the different ectoparasites of goats in selected towns of Pangasinan during dry season; (2) determine the prevalence rate of ectoparasite infested goats in Pangasinan during dry season; (3) determine which site (near bodies of water or far from bodies of water) and topography (coastal, hilly and lowland) has significantly higher occurrence of ectoparasites during dry season. Two hundred two (202) goats from twelve (12) randomly selected towns of Pangasinan were used in the identification of the different ectoparasites and their prevalence during the dry season. The ectoparasites collected were preserved and were brought to the Parasitology Laboratory of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IVM), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) North La Union Campus (NLUC), Bacnotan, La Union for identification. Data were tabulated and analyzed using frequency counts, means and percentages. Data on prevalence rate were statistically analyzed employing Two-Factor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) without Replication. Results of the study revealed that three species of ectoparasites were identified in goats in selected towns of Pangasinan which include Linognathus stenopsis, Damalinea caprae and Musca domestica among the ectoparasites identified, Linognathus stenopsis had the highest prevalence rate, while Musca domestica had the lowest. Majority of the goats in Pangasinan are infested with ectoparasites. The occurrence of ectoparasite infested goats near bodies of water are similar with the occurence of ectoparasites of goats in far from bodies of water and between coastal, hilly and lowland areas of Pangasinan during the dry season.
