Seed health testing of smooth Narra (Pterocarpus indicus willd) and Prickly Narra (Pterocarpus vidalianus willd) using blotter and agar plate method
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2023-10) Dagang, Evelyn R.; Pitas, Pauline P.
Narra is a vulnerable and critically endangered species, was included in the priority species for conservation and reforestation in the Philippines because of its limited potential to invade native plant communities, fast growth, adaptation to stress, ease in reproduction and industrial importance. Seed health testing is integral in disease risk management and improves germination potential of seed which finally leads to increase of the production. Determining the presence of seed borne pathogens allow managers to apply the appropriate controls or modify management practices to avoid the problem in the future. The study was conducted to evaluate the seed health condition of the Smooth narra (Pterocarpus indicus willd) and Prickly narra (Pterocarpus vidallanus willd) species using blotter and agar plate method and to determine which among the blotter and agar plate method would be the most effective seed health testing method for narra seeds conducted at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-North La Union Campus from March to April 2023. The Result of the study showed that Prickly narra seeds were relatively unhealthier compared to smooth narra and may facilitate contamination or disease outbreak which may result to lower germination percentage and survival rate. The result also showed that agar plate test method fosters quicker and prevalent infection development than the blotter test method. Thus, the agar plate test offers favorable environment and nutrition in order to observe and detect the occurrence of infections in narra seeds.
