Management and performance of selected Agri-based cooperatives in Abra as perceived by the members
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2012-03) Dacquel, Mirriam Grace B.
This study determined the management and performance of agriculture-based cooperatives in selected municipalities of Abra. It was conducted in the year 2012 in the five selected operational agriculturebased cooperatives. There were fifty respondents composed of twelve officers and thirty-eight members. Questionnaires were mainly used to gather data which were analyzed through frequency counts, percentages, means and rank. Results of the study reveal that the members of the cooperatives were in their early forties, the prime working age. Most of them were married and Roman Catholic. Many were college graduate and they have different occupations. More than one-half (1/2) of the cooperatives had been operating for the past 16-20 years and most of the cooperatives officers’ turnover was two years only. Many (70%) of the cooperatives have employed employee to do certain tasks in the cooperative and their membership trend was 86 above and, many of the members were having a share capital of P1,000-P4,999 and the types of services they offered were educational loan, time deposit, savings, loan assistance, buying good, farming assistance, business loan and scholarship grants. There were seven major problems encountered by the members and the cooperatives themselves. The most serious problem was lack of proper guidance and assistance on education and training according to the nature and character of the cooperative movement, followed by poor and sometimes dishonest supervision, inadequate membership support, moral regeneration through continuing education and value formation program of cooperatives, efficiency in the marketing of agricultural and non-agricultural commodities leading towards stabilization, weak and / or corrupt management and insufficient capitalization. The five equivalents which achieve an extremely satisfactory rating were: “sense of discipline of officers and members”, “commitment, unity, cooperation and mutual trust among cooperative officers and members”, “decisiveness of management in imposing penalty, disciplinary measures or legal action against erring officers and member”, “distribution of members’ patronage refund and dividends”, “cleanliness and Sanitation”, and “management and disposition of garbage”. But four items failed to make such mark and were categorize as moderately satisfied with their lower ratings. These were: “conduct of continuing education program for its members”, “adequacy of facilities, materials essential in the operation (e.g. computer, chairs, tables, etc.)”, and “consultation/ involvement of cooperative committees in planning, policy formulation and decision – making”. The overall performance and management rating reveals that the cooperatives of Abra were very much satisfactory.
