Antimicrobial resistance profile of Escherichia coll isolated from the rivers of District I of Ilocos Sur
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University North La Union Campus, 2025-05) Costales, April Pauleen P.
To understand the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), in a One-Health perspective, surveillance play an important role. Monitoring systems already exist in the human health and livestock sectors, but there are no environmental monitoring programs (Anjum et al., 2021). The study investigated the presence of isolated Escherichia coli, the AMR and MDR patterns from water samples collected from the rivers in the District I of Ilocos Sur. The 96 water samples collected undergone Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method using 12 antibiotic discs. Descriptive analysis, and ANOVA was employed to determine significant differences on prevalence rate and zone of inhibition. The overall prevalence rate of E. coli was 57%. Majority of the isolates were 100% resistant to Erythromycin, Cefepime, and Ciprofloxacin. The dominant resistance pattern was SCnEIpmFepFoxAmcSamCipTrF (Streptomycin – Gentamycin – Erythromycin – Imipenem – Cefepime – Cefoxitin – Amoxicillin – Ampicillin – Ciprofloxacin – Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole – Nitrofurantoin) with MDR Index 0.92. Epidemiological mapping showed areas where samples were collected.
