    Incidence of non-infectious diseases of goats (Capra hircus) in Region I

    This study was conducted to: (1) identify the common non-infectious diseases of goats in Region I; (2) determine the non-infectious diseases affecting goats considering age in Region I; (3) determine the non-infectious diseases affecting goats considering sex in Region I; and (4) determine the management practices of goat raisers in Region I. A total of 1,698 respondents mostly backyard goat raisers or farmers from Region I were interviewed using structured questionnaire from 2003 – 2007. Frequency counts, means and percentages were used to describe the results. T-test was used to determine the significance of the relationship with sex. Results revealed that goats in Region I were affected with non-infectious diseases. Diarrhea (51.82%) and bloat (27.50%) were the most common among the nutritional diseases while in mechanical or physical diseases, wounds related to dog bite (11.95%) and accidents related to strangulation (10.31%) likewise, abortion (29.55%) were most frequently observed. Significant differences exist in the occurrence of non-infectious diseases considering age and in the occurrence of non-infectious diseases between sexes. Management practices revealed that more female goats (62.61%) were owned by the respondents, tethering (50.48%) were the most common type of animal raising, most were housed under the tree (19.5%), the most common type of breed were native (77.61%), giving vitamins (49.95%) as supplement and the respondents usually consulted Livestock inspector (22.61%).
