    Functionality of material recovery facility in selected barangays of Bacnotan, La Union

    The study sought to determine the functionality of the Material Recovery Facility in the 17 selected barangays of Bacnotan, La Union. Specifically, it sought to determine the: (a) demographic profile of the respondents in terms of sex, age, civil status, occupation, educational attainment, and household size, (b) extent of implementation of waste disposal methods being practiced by the respondents, (c) level of functionality of the material recovery facility in terms of: segregation, recycling, composting, (d) volume of waste collected in the MRF in terms of: non-biodegradable waste, biodegradable waste, recyclables, (e) significant differences in the waste disposal methods among the barangays of Bacnotan, La Union. A total of 340 respondents (170 community residents, 153 barangay officials, and 17 MRF personnel), who were randomly chosen, served as the respondents of the study. Informal interviews with the use of prepared questionnaires and personal observation were undertaken to gather data. Statistical tools used were frequency counts, percentage, weighted mean and Microsoft excel program. The Analysis of Variance 2 factor was used to determine the significant difference in the waste disposal methods among the barangays of Bacnotan, La Union Result showed that 53.53% were male, with a mean age of 45, married (90%), college graduate (25.88%), were farmers (29.12%) with a household size of 5. The respondents fully practiced waste disposals through; putting into pit, putting into sack, segregation, and selling to bottle and scrap metal buyers. The Material Recovery Facility in the barangays were found to be was slightly functional (2.08), with a 4.69kg/wk collected waste. There were no significant differences on the waste disposal methods employed by the respondents among the Barangays of Bacnotan, La Union.

    Year round royal jelly production determining the best season of producing royal jelly

    This research was conceptualized to determine the preeminent season for the production of royal jelly from the honeybee Apis mellifera. Three strong double-chambered colonies of equal strength were utilized throughout the duration of the study and the grafting method was applied to facilitate the production of the jelly by the bees. Royal jelly can be produced at any time of year provided that all the necessary requirements of the colonies are available. Research results revealed that the highest yield was obtained during the months of April and May, which coincides with the honey production season, wherein an abundant supply of food for the bees is available. Accordingly, production of royal jelly is best when there are sufficient quantity of pollen and nectar for the colonies and it is important therefore to note the honeyflow season in a particular area as basis for production.
