Ethnic management and marketing practices in raising goat by indigenous people in La Union

This study was conducted to determine the demographic profile, husbandry, marketing, veterinary/ health practices in raising goats by indigenous people in La Union and identify the common ailments of goats encountered that have been treated by traditional and commercial medicines . A total of 156 indigenous people goat raisers answered structured questionnaires and were interviewed. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of data composed of frequency counts and percentages. Most of the Indigenous people goat raisers of La Union were using native housing, some offered “atang” in the construction of goat pen, some practice rituals before and during the selection and acquisition of goat to be raised, practiced feeding rituals and fed forages and tree leaves to goats, practiced natural way of mating, practiced “uraga” in marketing goats, use of herbal plants in treating goat diseases; and encountered and treated ailments such as diarrhea, inappetence, parasitism, fever, wounds, respiratory problems and bloat.
