Publication Leachate assessment of Tagudin Municipal Sanitary Landfill(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2025-04) Barnachea, Chinie D.; Cajala, Arjelyn P.Leachate, a liquid produced through the breakdown of trash in landfills, is an environmental challenge due to its elevated concentrations of heavy metals, nutrients, and hazardous compounds that can contaminate soil and aquatic ecosystems. This study focused on assessing the leachate generated from the sanitary landfill of the municipality of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur. Using descriptive research design, the study analyzed the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate. Leachate sample was obtained using grab method and was subjected to laboratory analysis. Results revealed that the leachate conforms to the effluent standard for Class C Waters, particularly, the temperature, electrical conductivity, and pH. The leachate has low content of heavy metals, with <0.005mg/L for lead (Pb) and <0.0001mg/L for mercury (Hg). The low concentration of heavy metals in the leachate is related to the minimal amount of special waste collected in the landfill.
