Publication Geographic information system - aided identification of potential sites for Beekeeping in La Union(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus, 2009-03) Cachero, Leonard C.This study aimed to identify potential sites for beekeeping in La Union through the aid of Geographic Information System. Specifically, the objectives were to develop a location map of the existing National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) - assisted beekeeping projects in the Province of La Union; determine the land use/cover composition of the existing beekeeping projects within a 3-km radius; determine the relationship between land use/cover and average honey yield of the beekeeping projects; identify municipalities in La Union with potential for the establishment of beekeeping projects; and develop a methodology in the conduct of Geographic Information System- apiculture related studies. The descriptive survey method was used in gathering information from the forty six (46) NARTDI - assisted beekeeping projects in La Union. The data were gathered using structured questionnaires supplemented with personal interviews and observations to ensure accurate responses from the beekeepers of the projects. Geographic coordinates of all the beekeeping projects were gathered using Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. The Spatial Analyst and XTools, extensions of ArcView GIS 3.3 software, were used in the analysis to provide information out from the geographic coordinates. The procedure in the methodology used in the analysis of data on Geographic Information System was developed in this study. Results of the study showed that the greatest number of beekeeping projects were located in Bacnotan, La Union. The major land use/cover within a 3-km radius of the beekeeping projects were largely composed of agricultural, forest, and agroforestry areas while other land uses/covers were only shown in patches. It was found using the Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation that the average honey yield had a positive relationship to the agricultural and agroforestry area while there was a weak negative relationship of forest to the average honey yield. In addition, it was found that a productive stationary beekeeping site must have a ratio of agricultural area higher than agroforestry area with a lower portion of forest area (secondary forest). Findings of this study also revealed that the municipalities of Agoo, Bacnotan, Balaoan, Bangar, Bauang, Caba, Luna, Naguilian, Rosario, San Fernando, San Juan, Tubao, and Santo Tomas have greater potential for the establishment of stationary beekeeping projects based on their land use/cover pattern of “greater agriculture/ agroforestry – lower forestland percentage”, while the municipalities of Aringay, Bagulin, Burgos, Pugo, San Gabriel, Santol and Sudipen have lesser potentials for establishing stationary beekeeping projects since the land use/cover of these municipalities have a pattern of “greater forest land area with lower agricultural/agroforestry area percentage”.Publication Water discharge capacity of the watershed tributaries of DMMMSU-NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – North La Union Campus, 2016-03) Abellera, Jeric Cales; Cachero, Leonard C.; Cadiente Jr., Marcelo R.; Ufano, Jessie V.; Lucero, Gabriel V.This study was conducted to determine the water discharge produced by the four perennial tributaries of the watershed at DMMMSU-NLUC, Bacnotan, La Union and to determine the tributary that has the highest quantity of water produced. This study was conducted at DMMMSU-NLUC Watershed, Bacnotan, La Union from November 15, 2015 to January 30, 2016. The four monitoring stations of the study were Casiaman Creek, Manginat Creek, Pias Creek, Sinilian Creek. Result of the study showed that Manginat Creek obtained the highest water discharge averaging 23.88 L/s. and vegetative cover may affect stream flow through interception of precipitation, evaporation and transpiration
