Welfare status of slaughter hogs in the abattoirs of the province of La Union

This study was conducted to determine the: profile of hog transporter, utility workers and butchers;awareness of respondents to the RA 8485; management practices of hog transporters, utility workers, and butchers; welfare status of hogs in the abattoirs in La Union. The descriptive method of research was used in this study. All the respondents were male, with 1-5 years of experience. Butchers are mostly aware of RA 8485. Sources of hogs were backyard farms, uses tricycle, delivers hogs at afternoon for less than one hour, incises skin for identification, and cleans vehicle everyday. The pens accommodate 5-15 heads of hogs, with half having access to water, receives livestock from 7am-7pm, and disinfect pens everyday. The butchers uses restraint, electrical stunner, and knows to access stunned hogs. The welfare of hogs during transport in the province met most of the criterion and needs improvement on “freedom from pain and discomfort” and “freedom to conform essential behavior”. On lairage , slaughterhouses need improvement on “freedom from hunger and thirst”, and on stunning, slaughterhouses in the class LRME need to provide facilities for humane slaughter.
