Publication Reading levels of grade III learners as a basis for proposed intervention(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus, 2023-05) Albay, Jarcer Vonn R.; Asuncion, Myra A.; Mercado, Jeanelyn L.; Sotelo, Willynda C.; Ugay, Gloia F.The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results in 2018 revealed that Filipino students scored lower in reading compared to their counterparts in other participating countries. To contribute to addressing this issue, this study aimed to assess the reading level of grade three pupils in a rural primary education institution and propose intervention activities based on the findings. This study employed a descriptive method with thirty-five participants. The results showed that out of the fifteen categories of reading levels, nine were classified as ''frustration, " six as "instructional, " and none as "independent. " This means that most of the participants struggle to read at their grade level, and the current reading materials and instructional approaches may not be adequately matched to the learners' reading abilities. The results also need extensive support and follow-up to improve the participants' reading levels. Hence, the proposed intervention activities were drafted and evaluated by reading coordinators and experts, who found them "very highly applicable". The proposed intervention activities are designed to address the specific need~ of the participants and to help them improve their reading comprehension skills. By implementing these interventions, educators can provide targeted support and help students achieve higher levels of reading proficiency, ultimately improving their overall academic performance.
