Effects of seed priming using different ga3 concentrations on the seed germination and seedling growth of long stored cucumber (Cucumis sativus)
(Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University- North La Union Campus, 2024-05) Alibang, Jonel C.
Cucumber is a well-known crop throughout the country due to its versatility as food and medicine. However, viability of cucumber seeds decreased as the age of the seeds increased. To address this issue, the study was conducted to determine the effect of seed priming using different concentration of Gibberellic acid on the long stored seeds. The different treatments used as follows: T1- Water as control, T2- 500ppm, T3- 1000ppm, T4- 1500ppm, and T5- 2000ppm. The study was laid out in Complete Randomized Design with three replications at Barangay Mabanengbeng 1, Bacnotan, La Union from March 25 to April 9, 2024. The results revealed no significant difference among parameters, emergence index (29.47 ± 1.73 to 32.93 ± 0.21), speed of germination (31.11 ± 4.50 to 37.72 ± 1.99), final germination rate (10.83 ± 1.44 to 12.50 ± 0), mean emergence time (3.13 ± 0.15 to 3.50 ± 0.20), mean emergence rate (0.2900 ± 0.02 to 0.3200 ± 0.01), total emergence (100), plant height (11.10 ± 3.02 to 14.02 ± 0.63), leaf length (2.50 ± 0.21 to 3.00 ± 0.31), leaf width (2.82 ± 0.62 to 3.64 ± 0.05), stem girth (2.29 ± 0.05 to 2.62 ± 0.07), and root length (9.13 ± 0.84 to 13.07 ± 0.60). Based on the results of the study, cucumber seeds treated with different Gibberellic acid concentrate have comparable effect on the germination and growth of cucumber soaked with water. It means that cucumber seeds still have a good quality despite being long stored.
