Lakasa ti Sirib, DMMMSU Institutional Repository.https://lakasa.dmmmsu.edu.ph/handle/123456789/1754This study was conducted to determine: a) the significant components of the rabies elimination programs in Bacnotan, La Union; b) the status of the rabies elimination program; and c) initiatives of the community towards rabies elimination. The study made use of the descriptive survey research which utilized questionnaire as tool in gathering data. It was carried out in the selected barangays of Bacnotan. Ten (10) percent of the total households were selected in each barangay. There were two sets of questionnaire and two groups of respondents: the dog owners and the implementers. With regard to the dog owners, 72.37 percent were 31 years old and above and only 27.63 percent were 30 years old and below. As to the gender, it was found out that 62.33 percent were female while 37.67 percent were males. In terms of their educational attainment 16.14 percent reached elementary, while 44.84 percent and 39.02 percent were high school and college graduates, respectively. As regards to the family income, 44.4 percent earned a monthly income of Php 1,000 - Php 5,000, 15.69 percent earned Php 5,001 - Php 10,000 and 12.55 percent earned Php 20, 000 and above. For the socio-demographic profile of the implementers, all of them (100%) were above 31 years old, with 63.64 percent males and 36.36 percent females. With regard to their educational attainment, 13.64 percent and 86.36 percent were high school and college graduates respectively. As to status 9.09 percent were single and 90.91 percent were married. The monthly family income were at Php 10,001-Php 20,000 and Php 20,001 and above with a percentage of 18.18 percent and 81.82 percent, respectively. Dog owners who had vaccinated their dogs were 61.88 percent. The respondents could have their dogs vaccinated only when there was available vaccination. Educational campaign probably was not the priority. Of the 223 respondents only 18 (8.07%) of them have educational campaigns in their place while 91.93 percent have no educational campaigns in their place. In the barangay level, there were no rabies ordinances of each barangay, but they had yearly vaccination. Fifty (50) percent of the barangays had an ordinance on leashing dogs. On the part of the educational institutions, rabies was not incorporated in the curriculum for the grade school pupils. On the awareness of the respondents about rabies, 99.1 percent were aware of rabies while only 0.99 percent were not aware. Dog bites were increasing for the past 3 years but did not affect the number of incidence on both human and canine incidences. Community initiatives were low when it comes to rabies control and prevention. Of the respondents, 20.17 percent confines their dogs at day time, 50.22 percent at night time and 29 percent the whole day. As to the leashing of dogs, 51.12 percent of the respondents did not leash their dogs. Respondents who leash their dogs at day time were at 20.18 percent, at night time at 12.56 percent and the whole day at 16.14 percent. Only 41.15 percent of the respondents kept their dog indoors while 7.17 percent had cages and 50.67 percent had their dogs to stay free.en-USStatus of rabies elimination program in Bacnotan, La UnionThesis
