Lakasa ti Sirib, DMMMSU Institutional Repository.https://lakasa.dmmmsu.edu.ph/handle/123456789/1751This study was conducted to: (1) identify the species of gastrointestinal parasites present in goat; (2) to determine the effect of Cooked Coconut Oil (CCO) and Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) against gastrointestinal parasites of goats by increasing the frequency of administration; (3) to determine the most effective dose of CCO and VCO against the different species of gastrointestinal parasites of goats; (4) to compare the anthelmintic efficacy of CCO from that of VCO and (5) to analyze the economic possibility of using CCO and VCO as anthelmintic. The study was conducted from October 2009 to January 2010 at San Martin, and Sipulo, Bacnotan, La Union. Laboratory analysis was conducted at the Parasitology Laboratory of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union. Data were tabulated laid out in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) and analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and significant differences using DMRT. Results of the study revealed that there were three species of gastrointestinal parasites present in goats, namely; Strongyloides species, Strongyle type species and Moniezia species. Cooked and virgin coconut oil significantly reduced the EPG count of Strongyloides species, Strongyle type species, and Moniezia species of parasites of goat after the 2nd and 3rd administration. The 7 ml CCO and 7 ml VCO were the most effective dose against gastrointestinal parasites of goats identified. All the levels of CCO and VCO are highly effective based on standard criteria on the determination of effective anthelmintic by Reik and Keith against Strongyloides species, Strongyle type species, and Moniezia species after the 2nd and 3rd administration except for T1 which is only effective for Strongyle type species. CCO and VCO have comparable efficacy with the commercial anthelmintic albendazole. Actual market price value shows that coconut oil is more expensive than commercial anthelmintic albendazole.en-USThesis
